Here's one of his designs that is able to fly to the mun and back TWICE without refueling! While we're on the topic, have you guys seen "cupcake landers" on Youtube? He's got some great designs, though I think they all rely on airhogging (which I am not against, I've used that alot myself)

But honestly at that point are the wings even helping? I think at that point they are essentially "jet-assisted rockets". Yeah, I've gotten those "straight up them east" type of SSTOs to work a few times. The turbojets are *very* good for accelerating as fast as you can before switching to closed cycle, and are great for small SSTOLs that aren't really that good for anything else than getting into orbit. Ottomic a écrit :turbojets + aerospike are good combinations, as are turbojets + RAPIERs. rear landing gear just behind the center of mass. For that, I use straight-up RAPIERs, without jets. It will take you more vacuum delta-v, but it's a less tricky. Two mod recommendations that will make your SSTOs waay more enjoyable: FAR will make air more *meaty* and aerodynamics more relevant, without making you feel like you're cheating, especially on last version and Mechjeb has an option to prevent flameouts that will auto-throttle so you don't spin out of control at 25 Km.Īs a final note, I consider two principal approaches to SSTOL: The one I use on the previously shown planes is to get as fast as possible and as high as possible with airbreathers in order to save up fuel, but if you are going to refuel in orbit anyway you might consider a more direct approach by going straight up at 45 degrees, setting your apoapsis as high as possible on that direct ascent and then circularizing on closed circle. Turbojets until you can accelerate as much as you can before running out of air, enough closed cycle to get you in orbit. If you want it to go farther away on vacuum, you can always put more fuel on it. Turbojets + aerospike are good combinations, as are turbojets + RAPIERs.
